Grand Rapids, MN – Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital and the Itasca County Family YMCA (“YMCA”) will host the first of Grand Rapids’ “JustWalk™” Walk With a Doc walking program on Thursday, August 13th at 11:00am. Dr. Toni Youngdahl, Grand Itasca Family Medicine Physician, will give a short talk about a relevant health topic and lead the group on a refreshing and rejuvenating walk. The walks will take place on an ongoing basis, the 2nd Thursday of every month. The group will walk either outside on the trails at the YMCA or inside on the track at the YMCA, weather dependent.

Betsy McBride, Executive Director of the YMCA, said, “we are excited to work together to offer more programs for our community to become healthier. We hope people will take advantage of this great opportunity to Walk with a Doc.”

Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well being of the country. “This program has had tremendous participation and success in many other cities around the country,” said Dr. Youngdahl. “I’m very pleased to be a part of this exciting and simple program that has shown improved health results for many people.”

Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks or many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Youngdahl. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide these health benefits, as well:

  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis

Grand Rapids joins a growing list of communities nationwide that have created local Walk With a Doc programs. Walk With a Doc was created by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist who practices at Mount Carmel Health Systems in Columbus, OH, and he has been walking every weekend since 2005. “Walk with a Doc is honored to team up with Grand Itasca. By incorporating Walk with a Doc, Grand Itasca and the YMCA are demonstrating an exceptional level of caring and commitment to their community,” said Dr. Sabgir.

The walks are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required. Walks will be held the second Thursday of every month. Check-in is at 11:00am and the walk starts at 11:15am. Meet in the Active Living Center at the YMCA (400 River Road, Grand Rapids, MN). All participants will receive a free t-shirt and pedometer.
