Grand Rapids, MN – Burggraf’s Ace Hardware, in partnership with Grand Itasca Foundation, is hosting the 3rd Annual Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic set for June 2nd at Pokegama Golf Course. The casual 9-hole golf scramble was established to highlight the impact that local fundraising can have on local health care. In its first two years, this event funded over $43,000 in projects that directly expand, develop and enhance pediatric care for kids at Grand Itasca.

“Caring Fore Kids dollars have been critical in enabling our pediatric therapy team to have the tools needed to provide a high-level of pediatric care. We treat some of our pediatric clients for months, sometimes years. It is imperative that we have a vast array of equipment, programming and activities to keep our sessions fun yet challenging, and our pediatric clients interested and engaged. Caring Fore Kids dollars have met that need, and then some! Our pediatric therapy team is extremely thankful to the Burggraf family and Grand Itasca Foundation for sponsoring this annual event,” said Angie Gunderson, Occupational Therapist at Grand Itasca.

This event has allowed Grand Itasca Foundation to fund several pieces of rehabilitative pediatric equipment including: new speech therapy tools, a new treatment chair with fully adjustable supports to help with proper posture, a pediatric walking ramp, a recumbent bike to help with arm and leg strength and coordination and a new walker and parallel bars to help kids with mobility and stability. “The kids using this equipment are working very hard at their appointments to improve their skills; that is why we work so hard to fundraise, to help support them and to invest in the care that they need,” said Kelly Kirwin, Grand Itasca Foundation Director.

“One of the highlights of our event is our ‘All-Star’ kids,” said Steve Burggraf, owner of Burggraf’s Ace Hardware in Grand Rapids. “Each year, we highlight kids who are directly benefitting from our fundraising efforts. The kids, along with their families, are on the tee box during the golf tournament meeting, greeting and shaking hands with our golf participants. The spotlight is on them for the day. The kids are why we do what we do and they are what makes this event so special.”

Annually, Caring Fore Kids funds coloring books for all pediatric patients and visitors at Grand Itasca. Coloring books are offered at registration to help keep kids busy while they wait for their appointment. Grand Itasca teddy bears are also funded annually by Caring Fore Kids dollars. The teddy bears are used to help comfort pediatric patients when they are scared or in pain.

Nationwide, Ace Hardware has a tradition of supporting their communities with a special focus on raising money for health care for kids by supporting Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Burggraf wanted to continue the Ace tradition, but keep his fundraising dollars local. “It was very important to us to keep the dollars local,” said Burggraf. “We’ve learned that our local clinic and hospital needs our support to continue to enhance the care that they provide each day for all of our kids. I am proud to be Grand Itasca’s partner for this event.”

The Burggraf family has set a goal to raise $50,000 for Grand Itasca kids in 2016! “A $50,000 goal is a tall order for 2016, but this work is very important and we want all of our kids to have access to high-quality care, so our committee and the community is stepping up to the challenge. We anticipate that this year’s event will be the best yet,” said Burggraf.

The 3rd Annual Burggraf’s Ace Hardware Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic will take place on Thursday, June 2nd at Pokegama Golf Course.
