Local Partnership to Benefit Health Care for Kids

4/9/2015

Grand Rapids, MN – Burggraf's Ace Hardware, in partnership with Grand Itasca Foundation, has established an annual fundraiser to support health care for local kids and looks forward to holding this year's event on June 4th at Pokegama Golf Course. Nationwide, Ace Hardware stores have a tradition of supporting their communities with a special focus on raising money for kids. Since 1991, the Ace Foundation has donated over $58 million nationally to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Steve Burggraf, owner of Burggraf's Ace Hardware in Grand Rapids wanted to make a difference locally, in addition to continuing to support the national fundraising efforts by Ace. Thus, in 2014, the Burggraf family created the Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic where every dollar raised directly benefits pediatric care at Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital.

The casual 9-hole golf event was established to highlight the impact that local dollars can have on local health care. “Our goal is to have an event that brings people together for a fun afternoon to raise money for kids,” said Burggraf. “We also want to give the community an opportunity to meet some of our local kids and their families who are benefitting from the wonderful care they receive right here at home.” These local kids, referred to as Caring Fore Kids “All-Stars,” are pediatric patients at Grand Itasca who are asked, along with their families, to share their stories with our community.

“What is important is that all proceeds from this event help expand, develop and enhance pediatric care for our kids in our community,” said Burggraf. “We want the funding to stay local so that when you and I walk in to the clinic with our kids, we can see the difference.”

Last year's event raised over $25,000 and helped fund numerous projects and programs at Grand Itasca. “Eat Right, Eat Healthy” coloring books are now offered at registration to help keep kids busy while they wait for their appointment. Grand Itasca teddy bears are available to nurses in the Emergency Department and in the hospital to comfort kids when they are scared or in pain. “These two programs alone make me feel good about what we are doing. We are giving staff tools to enhance the care they can provide for kids at our local hospital. Charitable gifts in health care are so important to help enhance and improve the great care already being provided,” said Burggraf.

The 2014 event dollars also helped purchase several pieces of rehabilitative pediatric equipment including: new speech therapy tools; a new treatment chair with fully adjustable supports to help with proper posture; a pediatric walking ramp; a recumbent bike to help arm and leg strength and coordination; and a new walker and parallel bars to help with pediatric mobility and stability. “We are proud of the work we have done so far and the difference we have made for kids at Grand Itasca, but there is always more we can do and we are excited to make this event an annual tradition” said Burggraf.

Grand Itasca Foundation is the recipient of the dollars raised at the Caring Fore Kids event. Grand Itasca Foundation Director, Kelly Kirwin said, “We are excited to partner with Burggraf's Ace Hardware again this year on the Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic. We help identify the greatest needs for pediatric care at Grand Itasca and our board helps distribute the dollars back to the clinic and hospital for direct patient care. We have seen some great benefits from the equipment purchased for children with these dollars over the past year and are looking forward to bringing new resources to the children in our community.”

“Funding opportunities are limitless in health care and we see that both nationally, through the Children's Miracle Network, and locally, right here at Grand Itasca. Health care is always changing and new technology and advancements are always available. With the additional funding, Grand Itasca can continue to reinvest in more tools and enhance current programming for all of our kids in our community,” said Burggraf.

The 2nd Annual Burggraf's Ace Hardware Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic will take place on Thursday, June 4th at Pokegama Golf Course. To become an event sponsor or if you wish to golf or attend the event reception, please contact Sean Burggraf at 218-326-8594 or visit www.burggrafsace.com.
